Hinman Law Office

Boston Criminal Defense Attorney

If you have been charged with a crime in Boston, it is in your best interest to have a criminal lawyer who has experience in Boston courtrooms. Attorney Hinman is a former Boston prosecutor who has practiced criminal law in Boston for her entire career. Attorney Hinman was a prosecutor in Dorchester, one of the busiest courts in the state, and then went on to become supervisor of the South Boston District Court. Attorney Hinman was most recently a member of the Narcotics Unit, arguing felony drug and Trafficking cases in Suffolk Superior Court. Attorney Hinman has also practiced in the Boston Municipal Court and Boston Juvenile Court. Her knowledge of these courts, its judges, its staff, and its procedures, gives her clients a unique advantage.

Attorney Hinman handles all criminal matters, including OUI/DUI, Drug Crimes, Theft Crimes, Violent Crimes, White Collar Crimes, Community Order Crimes, Clerk’s Hearings, Restraining Orders, Motion Hearings, Probation Violation Hearings, Motor Vehicle Crimes, and College Student Defense.

Boston Drug Crimes

The Boston Police Department, State Police, FBI, and the Drug Enforcment Administration (DEA) are all responsible for the investigation and enforcement of drug crimes in Boston. Some of the more common drug crimes are Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance, Distribution of a Controlled Substance, and Trafficking. Trafficking can be charged if the weight of the drugs exceeds a specified amount (usually 14 grams). The penalties for various drug crimes depend on the type, or class of drug. For example, the penalties for selling heroin are more extreme than the penalties for selling marijuana. You can read more about drug crimes here.

There are many ways to defend a drug case. The first thing that should be examined is the initial stop and seizure of any physical evidence, and any statements made to law enforcement. If police used a search warrant, the warrant should be evaluated for any constitutional, technical, or procedural deficiencies. These issues will be argued in court at a Motion to Suppress Hearing. The chain of custody of the physical evidence must also be examined, along with the testing and analysis of the drugs. Attorney Hinman has extensive experience with search and seizure issues, and as a member of the Drug Unit in the District Attorney’s Office, was responsible for assisting in the authoring of search warrants. Attorney Hinman’s intimate knowledge of the way that drug cases are investigated and prosecuted in Boston allows her to provide her clients with the most aggressive and effective defense possible.
